During 1920s women had gained more freedom than they had ever experienced.

They had the right to vote if over 21.

There was more contraception available to them

More women staying on in school and going on to higher education.

Economically they had managed to increase their numbers in manifacturing and in white collar jobs.

Nazis policies and ideas were reactionary.

The Nazis tried to boost the birth rate by ending unproductive marriages. Divorce was easier.

Marriage loans were given to women who gave up their jobs.

Restrictions were put on women being employed int he Civil service.

More welfare schemes to help women and their children.

The women attending recuperation homes after childbirth rose from 40, 340 in 1934 to 77,723 in 1938.

Measures:

Motherhood cross, loans, penalties such as higher taxes on couples with no children, restrictions on abortion.

1938 Marriage Law extended the ground for divorce

Women dismissed from top civil service and medicine jobs in 1933 and then banned from being judges and lawyers in 1936.

How effective were they?

Effective

Many of the Nazi's ideas were shared with women who then viewed their ideas positively.

The Nazis set up several women's organisations that involved women outside the family sphere.

Despite negatives, it is important to recognise that the Nazis were able to bring about attractive aims such as welfare and improvements to the social services.

Not as effective

Hitler Youth encouraged young people to spend time away from their parents and challenge non-Nazi attitudes from their parent.s

The ideas of a pure race lead to divorce and sterilisation of those who were considered to be unworthy, evoking the anger of the Catholic church.

The Nazi attempts to revert back to the idea of women staying at the home was unsuccessful because the number of women in jobs increased due to economic recovery and war. Therefore, many of their policies were contradictory.

It is hard to tell how many women took on Nazi ideas

Middle class women who had more restrictions on what they could do, were less enthusiastic.

It can also be said that alt=thogh the ANzis carried otu specific politices towards women, they had to be cautious. Only a few women were forced out of their jobs,
