They weren't rioting against segregation but it was a class revolt of the underprivileged versus the privileged.

MLK 'I worked hard to get these people the right to eat hamburgers and now I've got to do something... to help them get the money to buy it'.
Martin Luther King went to live in a ghetto in Chicago to experience the life the people were having and to find a solution to their problem,

Unemployment, housing and education were major issues
Other great Northern cities were closed off the Martin Luther King.
Chicago had a tradition of protest.
Chicago led a major religious group that supported MLK's action in the South.
King was going to focus on discrimination in housing sales-they stopped moving out of the slums.
The media follows MLK and he leads them round/.
MLK tries to win Northern groups over to him for the SCLC to take over the fight for improvements.
SCLC and Chicago activitists fall out.
King claimed Mayor Daley did little to help.
With temperature near 38 degrees, the police cut off the fire hydrant that black kids were using to cool down.
King and his family left because of the heat which angered people/
500 blacks defied King and provocatively entered a white suburb because of the police shutting down the water.
The few people in the North that did support MLK lost their faith in him.
Most Northern blacks them turned to Malcolm X and the Black Power.
