The new South-Some considered the South totally transformed after the Civil Rights Acts 1964 and the Voting Rights act 1965.

Problems in the North-Ghettos and riots

During Nixon's presidency, the percentage of Black children in segregated schools fell from 68% to 8%

Economic prospects

1947-3,272 detroit manufacturing firms employed 338,400

1977-1,954 manufacturing firms employed 153,300

Companies preferred to invest in the South. Trade unions were less powerful

South offered less taxes and cheaper property

Grocery, utility bills and healthcare also cost less.

Missing the culture of the South

Some relatives were still living in the South

Some were returning to take care of aging relative

Climate and geography

North and midwest suffer hash winters-many so called 'snowbirds' sought to escape freezing winters.

Many younger people enjoyed the beaches
