Kreisau Circle was a group that met at the estate of Moltke. Their main reason for opposing was the brutality of the Nazis. They were concerned with planning for the future than active resistance. They would discuss pans for a new Germany following Hitler's removal.
Many of the elites however did not oppose. They believed in many of the policies of the Nazis, such as rearmament and shared hostility towards the treaty of Versailles.
The Army too could have opposed. However they enjoyed some degree of freedom as they were never fully co-ordinated until the summer of 1944. They had support the Night of the Long knives. Furthermore, they made an oath to Hitler.w
However, 1938 saw conservative resistance following the Blomberg-Fritsch affair
Beck and others believed that Hitler's plan to invade Czechslovakia could only lead to continental war against Britain and France. They were going to stage a coup when the Allied appeasement of Hitler cut the ground from beneath them
Military failing of 1942-44 lead to more resistance in the Kreisau circle. (such as Stalingrad)
The circle had political conservative and Christian values.
Bomb plot-1944.
Briefcase was moved
The generals in Berlin hesitated
5,000 supporters were killed.
It is worth asking though that had they have killed Hitler, would there have been support for them?
Why the elites failed in bringing down Hitler
They only really recognised the need to resist after the developments of 1934-1938 by the time that regime was too well established.
The military oath that tied the army to its leader was taken seriously.
Hitler's diplomatic and military planning blinded the elites and lulled them into a false sense of security.
Planning and organisation of any resistance was difficult due to the police state.
