SUCCESSES
Was vital in ensuring the demise of Jim Crow in the South
He was an inspirational leader
Orchestrated Birmingham=encouraged the Kennedy administration to support the 1964 Civil Right Acts.
Masterminded the Selma march=Voting rights act. Used violence to his advantage.
Used protest to change the focus of black activism from litigation. Helped to make the anti-segregation principles a reality.
LIMITATIONS
Change was not wholly down to him, for example, the NAACP, CORE, SCLC and other churches and organisations helped.
Change was also due to the federal government, Supreme Court and President Johnson=they changed white opinion and extremists.
Steven Lawson "the federal government made racial reform possible, but Blacks in the south made it necessary.
Failed in Chicago- the ghetto problems were great and longstanding.
