Before we look at the factors on their own, I'm just going to consider what things we have to bring in when we are faced with a question not only about how Hitler came to power but how he managed to keep this.
The Enabling Act
Allowed laws to be passed without the approval of the Reichstag.
The Death of Hindenburg
The death of Hindenburg meant Hitler seized control, merging the role of the Chancellor and President into one, called the Furher.
Decree for the Protection of People and State
Helped to set up Germany as a police state. This also meant that no parties could campaign (Germany was now a one-parry state)
The media was closely moderated and censored. It came about as a result of the fear from the Reichstag fire towards Communism.
Gleichschaltung
This meant 'co-coordinating' or 'bringing into line'.
Areas of society were 'Nazified' or brought under Nazi control. For example, people were forced to join organisations.
The Night of the Long Knives
Hitler consolidated his power within the party. He eliminated the threat of the SA. This ensured the support of the army, who swore an oath of loyalty to Hitler upon Hindenburg's death.
Killing Rohm also meant that there was no longer the threat of a Second Revolution (this will be explained in more detail when this factor is looked at individually)
