To give dictatorial powers. But firstly, it needed the support of a 2/3 majority in the Reichstag (because that's the way it worked, can't remember why but if I do, I'll be sure to update it)

The Communists+SPD Leaders=Concentration camps, hiding or had left the country.

To get this 2/3 support, Hitler needed the Catholic Centre Party.

He proposed a deal:

vote for the bill and the Nazis will guarantee rights of the Church (see the Concordat)

Only 94 members of the SPD (remember, some were still there. The leaders weren't though) voted against it.

On the day:

The Reichstag was surrounded by members of the SA and the atmosphere was very much of violence and fear.

Hitler made a speech emphasising Christian values in Germany to please the Catholics.

Kaas (from the BVP, basically the Catholic leader) stood up and also gave a speech saying that they were willing to put their concerns aside.

However, Otto Wels of the SPD said 'could destroy ideas that were eternal and indestructible'.

However he wasn't really noticed....

The Catholics were told that they would soon receive a record of their agreement in writing: 'written constitutional guarantees' if you want to sound posh. The Nazis said to them 'it's being typed up'.

Obviously it wasn't.

However coming voting, thanks to the 2/3 majority, Hitler was now dictator.
